Reflections on customizing my blog

I did some more work on my menus, and I created a home page to be my landing page and a page for my ds106 work. My home page will not show my recent posts. Instead, folks can view posts by category using a widget. I added a widget that links folks to my other social media sites.  I eliminated a few widgets that came with the theme.

I like the way my blog is turning out, however:

  • I don’t have a purpose for the blog yet
  • Using a theme limits my creativity

I would like to take an HTML class so that I can eliminate the theme. Once I come up with a purpose for my blog, I can create a better homepage.

Cyber-infrastructure material

Article: A Personal Cyber-infastructure

Gardner asks the question, what if students are assigned their own web server to create their cyber-infrastructure. My question to Gardner is will students be required to do this? I am enjoying the ds106 course, but it is quite technical. I don’t doubt that these skills are valuable, but I am wondering if requiring students to master these skills will put a degree out of reach for some students. Are these skills required to be successful in all majors?

“Everyone’s always telling you to think outside the box. Well i for one am taking a stand and say ‘No!’ Inside the box is the new way. It’s so new people don’t even know about it yet. Just get yourself set up and comfortable and you are away.”

“Add a caption to Id-iom’s image. Be funny, be creative, be DS106 #4life.”

I used fotor to add the caption to the provided image.

My first GIF

It was so exciting! I loaded YTD in order to download a YouTube video. I used MPEG Streamclip to trim the video and GIMP to convert the image sequence to a GIF. I used these instructions, which were very good. The process was easy, and here’s the result…

This is the opening scene from my favorite movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s a little hard to see, but she’s looking in the window of the Tiffany & Co. jewelry store.

“If I could find a real-life place that made me feel like Tiffany’s, then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name.”

Tiffany’s is not my safe place, but I do relate to the search for circumstances that bring anxiety to a manageable level. Another great quote…

“You know those days when you’ve got the mean reds…. the blues are because you’re getting fat or maybe it’s been raining too long.  You’re sad, that’s all.  But the mean reds are horrible.  You’re afraid and you sweat like hell, but you don’t know what you’re afraid of.  Except something bad is going to happen, only you don’t know what it is.”

My First GIF Fight

GIF Fight

Since this is the scene in the iconic movie, A Christmas Story, that so many people watch over and over, I just had to do it!

I selected an image to add a GIF to here, and layered my GIF into it. However, it’s not that easy. Here’s how it looked…

A fellow ds106 student provided these instructions. I was then able to create this…

The animation is moving around because I didn’t merge each animation layer to the static image in exactly the same spot every time.

Final Thoughts on Unit Two

Have I got the process down?
